Want to discover the best bike routes in Valencia without paying for a tour guide? You’re in the right place.
If you are starting your ride from the City/Turia Park start reading from *
Starting at Beach Bikes Rental Shop, pick up the bike path across the street and cycle parallel to the promenade going around Las Arenas hotel until you reach the Marina. Here you pick up the old Formula One (F1) race track where the Americas Cup was also held. You’ll pass the maritime warehouses ‘Tinglados’ now used mostly for skating. Tourist info is next door but continue alongside the Tinglados, don’t turn right unless you are going to the City or Turia River Park. Further along you will reach the Industrial Port. When you can’t cycle any more turn right towards the Spanish Flags of the Civil Guard where the bike path continues. You will cross the old Turia River going into the sea and pass by Nazaret, an up-and-coming neighbourhood that used to have a beach and chalets for the wealthy but was overrun by the port and fell into decline. Follow the bike path around and under the new tram bridge and alongside the train line. Continue straight
*(the cycling bridge over the train tracks by the church “Parròquia de la Puríssima Concepció” is where cyclists from the city can join the route). You will now be following a red bike path separated from the main road, until you reach the bridge over the new Turia River. Go over the bridge and turn left towards the beach for Pinedo, the first beach town in Albufera Natural Park. Stop here for a drink or snack or keep going, the beaches are less developed and natural the further you go. A stop off at the Mirador Aves Saler boardwalk is recommended
Picnic benches can be found here as well as next to these Public toilets . A few restaurants are along this part of the beach but in low season/midweek they may not be open.
(Your best and final option for food if you do not ride to El Palmar is the village of El Saler, a short detour. Restaurante Robert has various options including some basic vegetarian choices. Head back towards the beach, don’t take the bike path further along this main road as it suddenly stops halfway).
The next part of the the beach route is a new tarmac road which has few cars and is shared with bikes, you’ll pass an abandoned former 5 star hotel the Sidi Saler that once accommodated famous guests as Sting & Tina Turner. The next part, a right turn, is stoney and sometimes has puddles but is short. Turn left at the crossroads and cross the bridge over the Gola de Pujol, one of only three channels passing water directly between Albufera Lake and the sea. You have reached Pujol Lagoon . In Season, Flamingos can sometimes be seen here (for a more intimate look, book your slot at the Visitors Centre Racó de L’Olla (see below). You are now in the heart of the Natural Park and it is also a nice part to walk or cycle around, through the pine forests on spacious tarmac paths. If you have time, lock your bike up and follow these nice walking options
To visit the Albufera Lake Main Lookout, cycle the minor road to the west of the lagoon or walk the boardwalk alongside the Gola to reach the main road. This is one of the few parts of the Park where you can have a good view of the largest freshwater lake in Spain. Here you can take a beautiful boat ride with Albufera Paseo en Barca . Boats will be waiting to take you on a 40 minute ride, for just €4. On busy days or with large groups you can find information to reserve, it is best to call.
From here you can cycle the main road to reach the turning to El Palmar (see below) or go around pujol lagoon towards the Devesa nudist beach (Playa Maladetta) and continue through the dunes and pine forest towards El Perellonet or turn back onto the main road to reach the turning for El Palmar).
To reach El Palmar take the turning at the roundabout and here on the corner you will see the Visitors Centre Racó de L’Olla . From here the only way is one road, it is accustomed to bikes but a little narrow especially on the small bridges, Sundays are especially busy. El Palmar is the famous village and home to Valencian Paella, located on the edge of the rice fields. There are many options here for all budgets and some include a boat tour too.
The recommended way to navigate by bike to Albufera is using your phone’s GPS navigation: Beach Bikes provides this route described above and 2 others plus a phone holder all included for free with your bike rental.
